Pinch & Pull House

Solh Studio's 'Pinch and Pull' home resides in the historic coastal City of Fremantle (Walyalup). The home is a playful and fun take on various architectural elements that entices both inhabitants and passerby to be explorative of the residence's fine details.

The concept of the home was born from the mixed media art instillation: Inside is not Outside, by Artist Ulla von Brandenburg. Paramount to us was the artworks invitation to explore by manipulating a large red curtain with fun pinching and pulling movements.

We strived for the same idea of exploration in our home by manipulating architectural devices like form and façade with the same fun movements as the instillation. These elements are most visible on the ground floor, where a perforated aluminium 'curtain' is pinched and pulled to reveal some, but not all. The perforations also aid in filtering light and offering privacy to the surrounding streetscape.

Steretomic in nature the aluminium curtain aids in drawing its solid, and monolithic form toward the Earth, seamlessly grounding the home on the site, and surrounding streetscape. The podium like ground floor also works to elevate the lightweight, and open second story, visually indicated with it's change in material and smaller form.

Throughout the interior, visual ques encourage progression throughout the home, where datum lines guide you between spaces, levels, materials and colours, continuing the journey of constant exploration and experiences.

The coastal views framed throughout the home, are respectful of the proximity this residence has to the Indian Ocean, and surrounding Fremantle City, capturing the full essence of its beauty. A selection of warm and bright materials, and an analogously crafted colour palette reflect the site context of the Fremantle coastal area, and the wider Swan Coastal Plain.
